Committee permits county clerks to email cancellation notices under Senate File 165

Sen. Steinmetz presented Senate File 165, a statute cleanup that would allow county clerks to provide voter cancellation notices by email in addition to mail. “In addition to mailing the notice, the county clerk may also provide notice to the elector by email,” Steinmetz said.
Mary Langford, representing Wyoming county clerks, told the committee the change is an addition, not a replacement for mailed notices, and explained the notices relate to the periodic purge of registrants who have not voted during the most recent general election cycle. Langford said clerks currently send cancellation notices after each general election and the bill would permit sending those notices by e-mail as an additional option.
The committee discussed the measure briefly, saw no opposition in the room and advanced the bill on a roll-call vote. The committee recorded the result as “ayes and 1 excused.” Senator Steinmetz moved the bill forward; the clerks’ association supported the change.
