Auburn schools reopen gym after floor replacement; district readies school‑construction site visits

At the Jan. 8 meeting of the Auburn School Committee, the superintendent and facilities staff reported that a replacement gym floor in the district’s new building was completed ahead of the worst‑case timeline and students and teams resumed using the facility Dec. 27.
Todd Sampson, athletic director at Edgewood Little High School, said the project “went as smooth as I’ve seen a construction project go,” and thanked All American Sports Flooring, Hussey Seating and district staff for coordinating demolition, bleacher repairs and scheduling to limit disruption to winter athletics. While the project required relocating practices and contests — including games played at nearby schools and facilities — Sampson said the district held its first full day of wrestling and basketball in the new gym the weekend after the holiday.
Assistant Superintendent Scott Adeneer reported that the district had coordinated logistics closely with athletics and community partners during the floor replacement, noting efforts to preserve physical‑education time and minimize disruption.
Facilities staff also told the committee that Scott Brown and the Maine Department of Education’s school construction and renovation committee will visit district buildings next Monday through Wednesday to review renovation applications. The visits will include tours of all six elementary schools and Albert Middle School and meetings with building principals to show how facility conditions affect instruction and student subgroup demographics, staff said. The district’s standing facilities committee is being convened and expected to meet by the end of January to prepare application materials and next steps.
Superintendent Sue Dorris and district staff said they will continue coordinating athletic schedules, banner installations and remaining finishing work in the gym in the coming weeks.
No formal vote was recorded on facilities items during the meeting.
