Salem advisory panel advances preliminary design program; informal poll favors 7–12 configuration

At a meeting of the Salem Public Schools project advisory committee, committee members and consultants reviewed the Preliminary Design Program (PDP) deliverables required for the district’s MSBA feasibility study, discussed site constraints and community outreach, and recorded an informal straw poll largely favoring a 7–12 grade configuration.

Beth Ann, a school committee member who delivered the update, called the recent school committee retreat “really productive” and said Member Manning raised several points about preserving the integrity of the middle‑school experience as the committee considers grade reconfiguration. “She really has more expertise than any of us when it comes to working with kids that age,” Beth Ann said.

The meeting’s consultants, led by Perkins & Will design staff including Brooke and Patrick, outlined the major PDP deliverables: the educational program, an initial space summary (net and gross square footage), an evaluation of existing conditions, site development requirements, and a preliminary evaluation of alternatives (no work/code upgrades, renovation, renovation with addition, or new construction).
