Mayor Sonya A. Brown used the council meeting to issue two proclamations and to announce a series of community events.
Brown proclaimed January 2025 as School Board Appreciation Month and February 2025 as Black History Month for the City of Glenn Heights. “I, Sonya A. Brown, mayor of the city of Lehi Heights, Texas, do here by proclaim February 2025 as Black History Month,” Brown said during the meeting record. The proclamations recognized school board trustees’ service and called for community participation in related observances.
Brown also announced the State of the City address on Feb. 1, planned as a brunch beginning at 10 a.m. and concluding around 11–11:30 a.m. at the Glenn Heights Community Center, and a Black History Month Showcase scheduled for Feb. 20 from 6–8 p.m. at the City Center Courtyard.
In addition, Brown announced the city’s first Glenn Heights County Line Cook-Off, organized in partnership with the Red Oak Area Chamber of Commerce and governed by the Outlaw Barbecue Association. The event will be held at Heritage Park and is state-sanctioned, allowing competitors to earn points toward regional and national competitions. "This is a state sanctioned cook off," Brown said, and she noted Ellis County State Representative Bridal Harrison presented a resolution to sanction the event. Baylor Hospital in Waxahachie was named the presenting sponsor and the main competition will include half chicken, pork spare ribs and brisket with a total payout of $5,000. Brown said the city needs at least 20 judges and pointed attendees to the Red Oak Chamber website for competitor and judge registration.
City Manager Cliff Blackwell said the city will share event links on city platforms and the Red Oak Chamber site for registration and information.
The announcements followed a set of ceremonial proclamations and staff introductions that the mayor said were intended to connect residents with new city employees and to highlight community programming.
