Circuit court seeks ARPA-funded pilot for transcripts and visiting-judge courtroom; commissioners approve amendment request

Circuit court representatives told Oakland County commissioners they seek to expand a virtual backlog-response docket grant using ARPA funds allocated by the state supreme court. The court asked the board to approve an amendment that would allow pilot funding for a court-transcription service and potentially help offset costs for an additional courtroom used by the visiting-judge program.
Rich Lynch, appearing for the circuit court, said the court is considering a transcription pilot based on a program used in Indianapolis that could provide faster transcripts and possibly change how transcripts are produced across the court system. He said the proposed amendment requests funding but does not guarantee receipt of funds from the Supreme Court; negotiations and final allocations remain pending. "It also could potentially set the stage for a change in how court transcripts are produced throughout the court system," Lynch said.
The board approved the request; staff noted that the contract and any funding must still be finalized with the Supreme Court and other partners.
