Resident urges fixes to East Broadway storm inlet that floods near Jefferson School; public works says improvements planned
Summary
A resident told the commission that a single stormwater inlet in the 1000 block of East Broadway cannot handle runoff from surrounding paved blocks, creating a safety hazard and flooding two nearby homes; Public Works said adding inlets was proposed and work is planned once construction season resumes.

Nancy Perry of District 2 told the commission that a stormwater inlet in the middle of the 1000 block of East Broadway (near Jefferson School) drains water from eight paved street blocks and is too small to carry heavy runoff, creating floodwater that spreads across the street and floods two nearby residences.
Perry said she mapped the contributing area and identified about 36 houses and multiple paved blocks that send runoff into the small inlet. She said the existing inlet becomes overwhelmed during heavy rain or spring snowmelt and that water accumulates into a “lake” that vehicles drive through in a school zone. That wake, she said, ultimately jumps the curb and pours into two residences.
Perry told the commission the public works department had examined the problem and proposed adding one or two additional inlets to increase conveyance capacity; staff indicated they had contacted the affected property owners, and that some trees near the curb may need removal to install additional inlets. Public works staff said the work could not be scheduled before the end of the construction season but that crews plan to move forward when conditions and the asphalt plant availability permit.
A commissioner summarized the exchange by asking whether the work is already in the budgeting and construction pipeline; public works responded that the department has engaged property owners and intends to proceed as soon as it is practical.
No formal action was taken at the administrative meeting; the resident said she expected the recommendation would appear on the upcoming Monday agenda for further action.
