Union County honors Cranford coach Dennis McCaffrey on retirement after 25 seasons

Commissioners credited McCaffrey’s leadership with championships and long-term influence on players and youth sports countywide.
Commissioner Mirabella, who said she has known McCaffrey since grammar school, described the coach as a role model and recounted attending his 500th-win game. Mirabella said McCaffrey’s son, a senior that season, hit the winning home run for the milestone victory. “That’s amazing. Like, you can't make that up,” Mirabella said.
McCaffrey addressed the board and audience, thanking the county and local supporters. “First off, I'd like to thank the Union County Freeholders for having us here tonight,” he said. He told commissioners he was born, lived and worked in Union County, thanked his family and local supporters and said he felt proud to be “a Union County person.”
Speakers noted county support for local baseball, including financial and attendance support for fall leagues and community events. Commissioner remarks referenced support at Warren Anker Park and ties between Roselle Park and Cranford communities.
The presentation included family members and invites to celebrate the coach’s career; commissioners presented a written resolution of recognition. No regulatory or budgetary actions were taken related to the recognition during the meeting.
