The United Nations condemned an offensive launched by the M23 rebel group in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, saying the attack captured the town of Masisi, resulted in the deaths of at least seven civilians and forced tens of thousands of people to flee.
The spokesperson said peacekeeping colleagues reported the attack and displacement, and that the M23 is now threatening to advance further into Masisi and Walikale territories, and toward administrative centers such as Lubero in the northern part of the province. The spokesperson said the group has occupied large parts of North Kivu since June, establishing a parallel administration in territories under its control.
The UN reiterated that it is imperative for the group to lay down its weapons and abide by a ceasefire in place since Aug. 4, and urged all parties to remain committed to the Luanda process, the regional mediation framework for eastern Congo.
Why it matters: Renewed offensive action and population displacement worsen an already dire humanitarian situation in eastern DRC and raise the risk of broader instability in the region.
Details and context: The spokesperson cited UN peacekeeping reporting about civilian fatalities and large‑scale displacement. The Luanda process and calls for a ceasefire remain the diplomatic track referenced by the UN as a mechanism for addressing the violence.
