Public commenter urges Urbandale board to leave CIML, warns of new Des Moines Christian purchase

Cameron said residents have pressed the administration and board about changing conferences for nearly nine months and that community members remain skeptical because they have received no formal commitment from the district. “You have to understand the only reason we’re even in this position of talking to the board is that we’re repeatedly told by the administration we have no desire to leave the CIML,” Cameron said. He asked the board to state a desire to leave the CIML and pursue a new conference home for Urbandale student athletes.
Cameron also highlighted competition and development concerns, saying that Des Moines Christian School recently purchased “103 acres in the heart of the city of Urbandale,” and warned the purchase could reduce future residential development in the district and increase competition for students. He urged the board to provide long-term leadership on both conference affiliation and community growth.
The board heard the comments during the public comment portion of the meeting; no formal board action on conference affiliation or the land purchase was recorded during the session.
