Council approves creation of building official positions but pauses hiring while seeking revised contract

Council members reviewed the city’s building official services after about a year under a contract with a private contractor. Staff said the cost of contracted part-time building official services was approaching the cost of a full-time employee with benefits and presented three job descriptions: building official, building official limited and building inspector (grade 5).
Staff requested authority to post and hire for one of the three classifications depending on candidate qualifications. After discussion, a council motion approved the two new job descriptions but directed staff not to advertise the positions immediately. Instead the city will continue under the existing contractual arrangement while a council-appointed committee negotiates a new, more economically feasible contract with the current contractor (identified in the meeting as Greg).
Council members said the labor market is tight and that the city needs to balance budget constraints with service continuity. The motion to approve job descriptions but delay advertising passed on a voice vote.
