Shawnee council approves salt purchase, intersection design contract and stormwater work; ratifies claims

The Shawnee City Council on June 23 approved several public-works procurements and contracts, including a 5,000-ton road salt purchase, an engineering design contract for the Johnson Drive and Barker Road intersection, a corrugated metal pipe replacement contract at multiple stormwater locations, and ratification of the semimonthly claims list.

Kevin Manning, Shawnee’s director of public works, said the city will purchase about 5,000 tons of salt at $49.90 per ton from Independent Salt Company for a total of $249,500 to replenish depleted stores.

On transportation safety, Manning told the council the city received $700,000 in Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) safety funding for modifications to the Johnson Drive and Barker Road intersection and that the project will be designed this year for construction in 2026. Manning described design work that will modify superelevation and add pavement friction treatments and said the project will include tie-ins on Barker Road; staff estimates roughly $300,000 in local funding will be required in addition to the $700,000 grant.

The council also awarded a contract to Infrastructure Solutions to replace about 850 linear feet of corrugated metal pipe at multiple locations (Lake Crest, 50 Fifth Terrace and Brownridge). Manning said the work is expected to begin around Sept. 1, with approximately 90 days of construction, though start could be delayed by material availability.

Finally, the council ratified the semimonthly claims list for June 23, 2025, in the amount of $9,296,319.01.

Each of the items was brought forward as a staff recommendation and approved by motion during the meeting; council members voiced no extended debate on the individual items on the record.
