Syracuse City officials cite emergency at fire maintenance garage after floor failure

Syracuse City officials notified the City Council on an emergency maintenance problem at the Syracuse Fire Department's maintenance garage, saying the garage floor has deteriorated, is unsafe for routine maintenance and cannot currently support fire apparatus.
The issue was raised during a council meeting when City Engineer Mary Robinson and other staff described inspections that found failing plumbing and an oil-water separator under the maintenance-bay floor and a subsequent depression caused when a vehicle lift was used. "We found that those systems were failing and potentially leaking contaminants underneath the garage floor," Robinson said. She added the department decided to stop parking and doing maintenance in the garage after the floor showed worsening cracking and a small pothole formed when a lift raised a truck.
The situation, officials said, leaves the department with limited options to service vehicles. "Right now, we have nowhere to fix our trucks, nowhere suitable," a council speaker said during the discussion.
