The United Nations said on Tuesday that the Secretary‑General will travel to Lebanon for political meetings this week but has no plans to visit Syria during this trip and will not attend the inauguration of the President of the United States.
Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary‑General, said the Secretary‑General has been briefed on the situation in the region and expects to meet political leaders in Beirut on Saturday. Dujarric said the Secretary‑General will be back in time to brief at the ministerial‑level Middle East quarterly debate.
When asked whether the Secretary‑General would travel to Syria on this trip, Dujarric said, “The secretary general has no plans at this time to travel to Syria on this round of travel to the region.”
On a separate question about attendance at the U.S. presidential inauguration, Dujarric said, “There are no plans,” and that he was not aware of any recent precedent for a Secretary‑General attending a U.S. presidential inauguration in the last quarter century.
The briefing also noted that the UN will share travel and event details by email to the press as they are finalized.
