The Wauwatosa City Financial Affairs Committee voted on Jan. 21, 2025, to ratify the use of $772,124 in prior-year carryover levy capacity as part of the 2025 budget.
John Rajini, finance director, described the item as a technical correction: state law requires a separate vote to use prior-year unused levy capacity within 12 months and that omission during budget resolution preparation was an oversight. Rajini said the action has no effect on the 2025 budget or on property tax bills that were mailed in December 2024, but that failing to ratify the carryover could lead the Department of Revenue to reduce the city’s unused levy capacity.
Alder Phillips moved approval of the staff recommendation to use $772,124 of carryover levy capacity for the 2025 budget; Alder McCluth seconded. The committee voted 8–0 in favor.
Next steps: the item will proceed to the full Common Council for final action as part of the city’s budget process.
