Communications — both internal staff coordination and public outreach — was discussed as a cross‑cutting priority at the Jan. 15 workshop.
City Manager Sweet and staff described steps already taken (regular director meetings, a public information officer) and proposed further improvements including website functionality, clearer permitting guidance, more proactive crisis communications (hurricane/storm alerts), and additional channels for residents (text alerts, TV/message boards at city facilities). Several commissioners urged short‑format video updates or a regular “coffee with the manager” to let residents raise questions outside formal meetings.
Commissioners urged clearer pre‑project notifications for construction and maintenance activities that affect neighborhoods. A resident and several commissioners said bridge, creek and park projects had not always been communicated sufficiently and asked staff to improve notices for scheduled work. Staff responded that some notifications had been issued and agreed to look for lower‑cost ways to expand outreach (infographics, improved website navigation, targeted text messages and signage at public facilities).
The commission also asked for improved internal communications to ensure commissioners receive timely materials in advance and to reduce in‑meeting surprises. Staff pointed to director‑level coordination changes already underway and said those would be refined as the strategic plan is finalized.
