Octorara FFA students describe tractor restoration that competed at state farm show

Students in Octorara’s ag mechanics/FFA program presented a tractor restoration project to the Octorara Area School District board, summarizing the mechanical work, troubleshooting and recognition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
Grant Humble introduced the team and explained the project: a 1968 Cub Cadet donated by a student’s grandfather that the team restored to meet competition requirements. “My grandpa actually was able to give us a 1968 Cub Cadet, that we thought would be a great starting point for our project,” Humble said.
Students described the restoration steps: a full disassembly, engine inspection and repair after identifying compression problems, replacement of worn valves using parts from a donor tractor, replacement of a damaged wiring harness, and fitting badges and decals to correct earlier misbadging. They recounted testing continuity, finding a faulty voltage regulator, and installing a replacement regulator from a parts tractor to resolve electrical issues.
One student estimated the team logged roughly 200 hours on the project. The group also thanked sponsors and organizations that supported their entry, including Lancaster Farming and the Friends of the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Supervisor Mr. King was credited for hands‑on support and guidance.
Board members praised the team’s work and representation of the district. The restored Cub Cadet was scheduled for display in the high school main lobby, cordoned off for viewing. In later public comments, a parent thanked Mr. King for his role in the program and commended the students’ achievements.
