Students outline multi-phase courtyard project at Octorara Area SD meeting

Members of the Octorara Leo Club described a multi‑phase plan to renovate the courtyard outside the school during a presentation at the Octorara Area School District board meeting.
The students said the project began about six years ago and has progressed through stages of design, donated materials and student fundraising. “We are with the Octoraro Leo Club to present our courtyard project,” a student said at the meeting.
Board members and administrators heard that the project has been split into three phases. The students described Phase 1 as hardscaping — an amphitheater and sidewalk work that they said is already partially installed — Phase 2 as tree planting, meadows and other landscaping, and Phase 3 as finishing touches such as seating, birdhouses and gathering spaces.
The students reported they have funded the work so far through club fundraising and plan further car washes and bake sales to support continuing construction. At the meeting a speaker said the amphitheater was built “using the money Leo Club has raised in the past years from fundraisers.”
Board and staff speakers credited long‑running student leadership and local support for advancing the project. A district staff member noted the effort began after surplus block from a prior Arcaterra project was offered at a favorable rate; the presenter said a contractor agreed to provide a discounted quantity of block, which provided materials the students used.
Board members asked about additional funding and support. The students and staff said community donors and local groups have expressed interest in contributing trees or memorial plantings, and a Boy Scout troop had volunteered to plant trees if they are secured. Staff also offered to publicize the project on district channels and to provide a PDF of the students’ presentation.
The presentation closed with board members and administrators encouraging community members to see the amphitheater in spring and thanking the students for leading the work.
