Longtime Brentwood city manager Kirk Bednar to retire; commissioners appoint Jay Evans as interim

City Manager Kirk Bednar said Jan. 27 will be his last meeting after roughly 24½ years with the city, thanking commissioners, staff and the community for the opportunity to serve.

Bednar reflected on the longevity of city leadership and the staff he worked with: “Brentwood is a very unique and wonderful community,” he said, and described his tenure as an honor that allowed him to work with multiple commissions over two decades.

The commission unanimously approved Resolution 2025-11 appointing Assistant City Manager Jay Evans as interim city manager effective Feb. 1. The resolution, as read at the meeting, provides Evans a 15% stipend above his base salary while he serves as interim and states he may step down with 15 days’ notice; if he remains in the role until a permanent successor is appointed, he would return to assistant city manager under the personnel rules.

When asked if he would accept the interim role, Jay Evans replied, “It absolutely is, sir,” and the motion to appoint him carried without opposition.

Commissioners used Bednar’s final report time to praise several capital improvements and long-term projects completed during his tenure, including park and infrastructure projects and the city’s low turnover in the city-manager office.
