Contractors State License Board staff answered applicants’ questions in a public webinar on licensing requirements, telling prospective licensees they must show 48 months — four years — of journey‑level practical work experience in the trade they seek to be licensed in, and that the $450 application fee is nonrefundable.
“The application fee is nonrefundable,” said K., the workshop moderator for the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). Dana, a CSLB licensing staff member, explained that applicants must show “48 months, which is 4 years of journey level practical work experience … in the classification that they're applying for within the last 10 years.”
CSLB staff also described how applicants document that experience and who may certify it. The board requires a Certification of Work Experience form submitted with the application; the form lists seven possible certifier titles — such as employer, contractor, fellow journeyman, union representative, foreman/supervisor, business associate or fellow employee — and the certifier must have firsthand knowledge of the applicant’s work.
“If you have 5 [years], that should meet the requirement of the 48 months,” Dana said in response to one question. Staff cautioned that self‑employment can be used only if someone with firsthand knowledge can certify the work.
