Student rep Santiago Pickney lists orientation nights, literacy events and March career fair

Springstead High School student representative Santiago Pickney briefed the board on freshman orientation nights at several high schools, literacy activities, the Hernando Grown career fair on March 7 and a food service taste test scheduled for Feb. 27.
Santiago Pickney, the student representative from Springstead High School, gave the board a summary of upcoming school events and student activities during the Feb. 11 meeting.
Pickney said Nature Coast Technical High School will hold a freshman orientation April 15 at 6 p.m. in the gym. He also listed dates for other schools— freshman orientation nights where available, and said Central High School will announce its date when confirmed.
He highlighted recent literacy events across the district and noted several schools host programs pairing older students with younger readers. Pickney also promoted Hernando Grown, a career and technical education event for eighth graders on Friday, March 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Church of the Wildwood; the district will provide transportation and Pickney said he will be a speaker at the event.
Food and Nutrition Services will host a food show and taste test on Thursday, Feb. 27 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.; Pickney said the event will include 10 vendors and will inform menu choices for the 2025–26 school year.
Why it matters: The update gives families and staff dates and context for orientation, literacy, athletics and career outreach events, and signals a district effort to involve students in programming decisions about school meals.
