Resident urges fair code enforcement, neighborhood attention in Greater Wythe during public comment

Joan Weaver of Greater Wythe used the public comment period to urge the council to treat her neighborhood fairly in code enforcement and to follow through on promised neighborhood improvements.

Weaver thanked staff member Glass for assistance with information and said Greater Wythe still needs attention despite city investments elsewhere. “When your codes and compliances comes out, keep that in mind,” she told the council. “Is it selective or is it vindictive? We need to know.”

Weaver said she has raised concerns about the distinction between conditions the city deems a clear and imminent danger and those considered cosmetic. “We are not asking anybody to do anything illegal or immoral. But when you put that down, you do it and you do it fairly,” she said.

She also referenced the Virginia School Engagement Project award as work “won through our blood, sweat, and tears,” and urged council members to remain inclusive when implementing neighborhood improvements.

Weaver closed by extending condolences to Mayor Gray and his family during their recent bereavement. Her comments were the only public comment made during the session and were not followed by a public response from council during the meeting; the clerk noted that responses may be provided by the city manager, city attorney or council members after public comment.
