Stormont Vail Events Center approves equipment purchase, reduces modular flooring to fit budget

The Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners approved equipment purchases and a budget adjustment for the Stormont Vail Events Center at the Feb. 13 meeting.
Stormont Vail operations director Matt Rockers told commissioners the board awarded portable basketball goals to ATCO for $56,500 after the lowest bidder failed to meet specifications. Rockers said the ATCO units include shot clocks and illuminated backboards and are portable; the selection set the size and base offset that affected the flooring quantity.
Kellen Seitz of the Stormont field/events team told the board that to keep the project within its total budget, staff requested a $464.72 transfer from the Stormont Vail capital outlay to cover remaining costs and reduce the modular sports flooring purchase from roughly 55,000 square feet to just over 50,000 square feet. Seitz said that change reduces the project footprint by about two youth basketball courts; the main basketball playing surface will still be refinished.
Seitz also reported a lower resurfacing cost than initially estimated: the resurfacing element that had been presented as about $49,000 is now expected to be roughly $44,800 after conversations with the bidder.
Commissioners and staff discussed multipurpose uses for the modular flooring: Seitz said the system supports youth and high-school basketball, NCAA-size courts, volleyball, and indoor pickleball, and that Stormont Vail staff are actively working with local promoters and Visit Topeka to attract more events. Rockers said recent hockey games averaged about 3,000 attendees per game and listed a sequence of upcoming events, including boat and RV shows, a demolition derby and Kansas kids wrestling tournaments.
The board approved the award and the revised CIP requests by voice vote, recorded as 3-0.
