The Office of Hawaiian Affairs Board of Trustees recorded a series of unanimous roll-call votes at its Jan. 9 meeting in Honolulu.
The board approved all submitted minutes, appointed Trustee John Wahei the fourth as vice chair of the Committee on Budget and Finance, and adopted two committee-recommended additions to OHA’s 2025 legislative package: a Public Land Trust (PLT) working-group-related inventory/audit bill (BAE 25-02) and a Hawaii Community Development Authority framework for residential development in portions of Kakaʻako Makai (BAE 25-03). Each action was approved by nine "aye" votes; no "no" votes, abstentions or recusals were recorded.
Minutes approval: Trustee Lindsay moved to approve all minutes; the motion was seconded and passed on a roll call that recorded nine yes votes.
Appointment: Chair Kahele nominated "Trustee John Wahei the fourth" as vice chair of the Committee on Budget and Finance; Trustee Wahei accepted the appointment and the board ratified the appointment by roll call (nine yes votes).
PLT legislative-package addition (BAE 25-02): The Committee on Beneficiary Advocacy and Empowerment recommended adding a Public Land Trust Working Group-related inventory and audit item to the 2025 legislative package. No public testimony was recorded on that item during the board meeting; trustees approved the committee recommendation by roll call (nine yes votes).
Kakaʻako Makai legislative-package addition (BAE 25-03): The board approved this addition after trustees referenced a public informational meeting held Jan. 8 and after public testimony. Because the Kakaʻako Makai item featured multiple public and trustee comments about environmental and sea-level concerns, OHA trustees requested staff assemble or commission relevant technical materials to assist legislative outreach.
All roll-call votes were recorded on the meeting record; the board adjourned after announcements about upcoming legislative briefings and its next meeting on Jan. 23, 2025.
