Construction update: district project 'on time and on budget,' work moving to glazing, interior finishes

At the Dec. 10 meeting the Appoquinimink School District received a construction update on the district's new school project. The construction manager reported exterior work is moving toward completion and interior finishes are being installed.

Presenters described completed roofing, installation of large glazing in the cafeteria area, ongoing brickwork and ramp and sidewalk work at the main entrance. The gymnasium was described as having wall and control systems in place; kitchen coolers are on site and kitchen equipment installation was expected to begin the following week. Several classrooms and specialty spaces were shown in progress: cabinetry and ceilings are being installed, tile and toilet partitions are pending, and an art room will include significant glazing for natural light.

The construction manager and a site representative said the project remains within the established budget and on schedule. "We are in budget. We're on time, and and things are moving well," the manager said on the record.

Later in the meeting the board approved change orders presented for November and December that included additional site signage (approx. $67,000), upgraded scrubbable paint (approx. $62,000) and extended auditorium scaffold rental (approx. $64,000). The construction manager told the board these were two months' worth of change orders due to an earlier file upload error and that approving them keeps the project moving.

No separate board discussion altered the scope of the project; board members asked clarifying questions about sequencing and schedule and then approved the change orders by voice vote.
