Hartland board shortens trustee terms, approves package of governance and personnel policy changes

The Hartland Consolidated Schools Board of Education on Dec. 16 voted to shorten trustee terms from six years to four and approved a series of policy changes the board’s leaders said are intended to increase transparency and clarify governance procedures.

The board approved a package of changes that included: reducing trustee terms from six years to four; adding requirements for new-board-member background checks and orientation; amending the district’s special-meetings rules to limit such meetings to emergencies or to immediate issues affecting delivery of education; tightening when and how the public may register to speak during call-to-public; and restoring limited public-comment capability on the district’s social-media accounts while adding a district disclaimer.
