The license application for La Fiesta Restaurant was presented by City Attorney Morris, who said the city issued a preliminary approval letter on Nov. 19 and that notice had been published twice; the matter was at the 44th day of the process, with one more day remaining to act. City Attorney Morris said the closest church or school is Potter's House Christian Church, about 360 feet from the site, which is outside the 300-foot buffer defined in the notice.
The hearing produced one brief on-the-record clarification about who was the applicant. Jesus Vallejo came forward under oath and said he was the applicant and a tenant of the building; Juan Hernandez was identified as the building owner. Vallejo said some paperwork also referenced the name Jesus Villalue Gonzalez. City Attorney Morris acknowledged the correction: “You’re right. I stand corrected,” and the attorney confirmed Juan Hernandez was the building owner and that the applicant was the man at the podium.
No other witnesses offered testimony. After the brief exchange, the commission closed the public hearing and moved to a final vote. The motion to enter the public hearing was made by Mayor Pro Tem Bryant and seconded by Commissioner Paula. The motion to close the hearing was made by Commissioner Paula and seconded by Commissioner Jones. A motion to approve the license was moved by Commissioner Casaus and seconded by Commissioner Porter. The commission approved the license unanimously.
The meeting record shows the item as “request for approval of a restaurant, a beer and wine liquor license, with on premise consumption only located at 501 North Main.” The commission did not state additional conditions on the license during the meeting.
The commission’s agenda that night included upcoming committee meetings and an item to introduce an affordable housing plan, but no further public comments were offered on the liquor-license application. The clerk recorded the unanimous vote in the official minutes.
