Hernando school board restores Friday early-release days after debate over teacher training and athletics

The Hernando County School Board voted 5-0 on Jan. 14 to amend Calendar A and move scheduled early-release (half) days back to Fridays, reversing a prior committee decision that placed those dates on Wednesdays.
Board members and staff described the change as a response to feedback from teachers, parents and coaches about learning disruptions, after-school activities and the effectiveness of professional development. "I would love to see the half days combined to two so we have a full day for professional development," said Mrs. Hawkins, a school board member who moved to amend the calendar. "If we're going to keep the half days, I want more academic trainings that count toward required reading and ESE points."
