Community member Joe Mason interviewed Feb. 11 for a vacancy on the Pitkin County Planning & Zoning Commission, describing a background in economic consulting, recent engagement with the Woody Creek caucus and an interest in bringing an economist’s perspective to land-use deliberations.
Mason said he has lived in the valley about 15 years, reads and engages with land-use code and has been active on the Woody Creek caucus, where he said he has worked to mobilize local participation in land-use review. He described his professional experience as a Ph.D. economist and business consultant and said the role would let him contribute both to the caseload (individual land-use applications) and longer-term planning efforts, including the county’s 2050 planning process.
Commissioners and board members thanked Mason for applying and noted his recent caucus comments had shown an ability to add detail to the review process. The county staff noted the commission commonly operates with seven members and that quorum rules affect membership planning; the county has several open seats and renewal applications in process.
Mason said he understands the time commitment of the commission and has spoken with former members about expectations; the board told him they would interview other candidates and decide in the coming weeks.
