The Lee County Board of Commissioners approved a request from the Lee County Board of Education for $496,635 to reimburse the school board for demolition of the Jonesboro Elementary School site and authorized budget amendment 01-22-25-11.
County staff said the Board of Education first requested funding in the 2023–24 budget cycle for demolition costs totaling $600,000, but the request was rejected pending details about insurance proceeds. At the Jan. 20 special meeting staff presented documentation showing the actual reimbursement needed is $496,635. County staff also stated that asbestos abatement was completed prior to demolition to confine hazardous material.
Vice Chair Alan Rommel explained insurance proceeds were limited because the insurer determined the facility would not be rebuilt on the same site; staff reported the school system received $12,000 in insurance proceeds. Commissioners asked for clarification about prior insurance valuations and whether the insurer’s payout reflected that the site would not be rebuilt; staff and Rommel said the insurer’s valuation and payout reflected those factors.
A motion to approve the funding request and the budget amendment was made and approved by voice vote; no recorded opposition was noted on the audio record.
