The vendor would use cameras at up to five locations around Bremen Elementary for up to three weeks, collect video during arrival and dismissal peaks using Miovision traffic-counting equipment, and then recommend changes to improve traffic flow. Veil said he expected the district to pay the quoted cost because the campus is the district’s responsibility; he planned to share results with the village’s traffic liaison committee.
On missed instructional time, Veil explained how the district counts hours and days for state requirements. He said the district’s calendar treats one school day as an average of 6.5 hours, and the board forgives the first 39 hours of missed time — an amount equivalent to roughly six days — before the district begins scheduling makeup days. Veil noted that Bremen Elementary had already exceeded the 39 forgiven hours because of an extra closure for water and electric problems; several other buildings were close to the forgiven total. He told the board he and the treasurer had started talking about when makeup days could be scheduled and said President’s Day was the first likely option for makeup time if further closures occur.
Veil also thanked maintenance, transportation and bus drivers for school-opening preparations after recent severe weather and recognized the board during Board Member Appreciation Month.
Board members discussed timing of the traffic study and how the consultant would deploy cameras; Veil said he would give the vendor the go-ahead if the board had no objections.
