Resident calls for county task force on affordable housing amid federal fund uncertainty

During public participation at the Jan. 29 Clermont County commissioners meeting, resident Jen Mazzucchelli urged the board to develop a strategic plan or task force to address affordable housing shortages, transitional shelters and services for residents experiencing homelessness, disability or domestic violence.
Mazzucchelli, who identified herself as a resident of Bells Lake Apartments in Union Township, described her own experience as a single mother on a fixed income and said Clermont County ranks poorly in the state for affordable housing. She cited rapid rent increases, high eviction numbers in 2023 and a shortage of transitional shelters. “We are one of the worst counties in the state as far as affordable housing goes, and we have not been doing anything about it,” Mazzucchelli said.
She noted an upcoming veterans housing project that will create 28 homes but said that number would not meet county need. Mazzucchelli also flagged the recent prospect of freezes on federal funds and suggested county leaders consider collaborating across departments — including community development — to protect federal programs and coordinate funds for housing, domestic-violence support and substance-use disorder services.
Commissioners thanked her for speaking. No formal action on creating a task force or a strategic plan was taken at the Jan. 29 meeting.
