Santa Barbara Airport staff said the airport now publishes live parking-availability data for all three public lots — long-term, short-term and economy — on the airport website, and staff described near-term improvements to signage and longer-term plans for parking sensors.
"So for all 3 lots, the long term, short term, and the economy lot, you can go on there and see how many spaces are available," Airport Director Mister Hastert told the Airport Commission on Nov. 22, 2024. He said the current feed does not count disabled spaces and that staff plan to explore sensors that could report those spaces in the future.
Hastert said staff will leave the temporary orange construction signs in place through the holidays while usage patterns stabilize and that staff will consider adding website directions to the signs, a suggestion raised during the meeting by Commissioner Levi Maya.
The director reported passenger numbers are up compared with last year: year-to-date passengers are up more than 10% compared with the same period last year, and passenger traffic for October was up 12.2% compared with October 2023. Hastert also summarized takeaways from a recent air-service conference and noted American Airlines plans to switch its Dallas/Fort Worth service from an Airbus aircraft to a 737 with greater capacity; he also said Southwest plans to resume Denver service in its summer schedule.
Hastert said staff are preparing a scope of work to bring to the commission for an FBO (fixed-base operator) request for proposals. The RFP will seek long-term FBO leases and is intended to attract private capital investment in airport facilities; Hastert said the selection and subsequent construction processes will be lengthy.
Staff also announced a personnel change: Greg Goodsell, previously listed in meeting materials as airport operations supervisor, has been moved to the airport property supervisor role and will work on leases and the airport business park. Hastert said Goodsell will step down from the airport noise working group because of the role change.
The airport also installed two children’s exhibits in partnership with the Moxie Museum and will install additional interactive elements in coming days, Hastert said. No formal commission action was taken on these items at the meeting.
