Council sets Jan. 14 special meeting to interview three applicants for 5th-district seat

The Monroe City Council scheduled a special meeting for Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the council chambers to interview three applicants for the vacant 5th-district seat.
City Manager David Robinson said the vacancy followed Council Member Lamore27s resignation after his swearing-in as a county commissioner. Robinson said the city clerk's office vetted applicants and confirmed three who meet the qualifications to represent the 5th district: Leah Roca, Kelly Stringham and Gloria Raffko.
Robinson briefed the council on interview logistics: the administration will provide a list of compiled questions on Wednesday, councilmembers will be asked to vote on which questions to use and return selections by Friday, and the council will select 10 questions for the interviews. Robinson described a typical format in which councilmembers each ask two questions, the mayor asks a couple questions, and candidates will have time for opening and closing remarks.
Councilman Hayter moved to schedule the special meeting; the motion was seconded and approved on a unanimous roll call. The clerk recorded affirmative votes from Hader, Stilgrave, Vining, Jermaine, Felder and Mayor Clark.
Robinson also encouraged councilmembers to consider optional orientation and training offered by the Michigan Municipal League for a newly seated councilmember.
