County officials say appeals period passed for natural-resources ordinances 901 and 902

Commissioners and staff celebrated the county’s recent completion of work implementing new clear-and-objective natural-resources standards, adopted as engrossed Ordinances 901 and 902. Staff said the ordinances were adopted Nov. 5 and that the appeal period has passed.
Commissioners and staff recalled a long process that began with the state requirement for local clear-and-objective standards in 2017 and led to earlier adoption in 2020 followed by legal challenges. Staff said they worked through legal and implementation issues and communicated individually with property owners who raised concerns.
“We first adopted these standards in 2020, and that led to several significant legal challenges that staff diligently worked through,” a county official said. Commissioners praised staff for outreach and persistence in resolving issues with affected property owners.
With the appeal period closed, staff said they will move forward with implementing the updated standards. The county did not discuss implementation timelines or specific staff assignments during the session and no new ordinance votes were taken at the meeting.
