County staff recommend two appointments to Advisory Council on Racial Equity

Washington County staff presented recommendations to appoint two applicants to the Advisory Council on Racial Equity (ACRE) during the commissioners' work session. Amanda Garcia, the county’s community engagement manager, told commissioners that the ACRE membership subcommittee reviewed the applicant pool and recommended two candidates: Iman Abbas and Diego Yara Palazzi.
Garcia said the subcommittee considered six applicants from the last recruitment period; one applicant withdrew and others were not interviewed. The subcommittee held interviews and "unanimously voted" to recommend the two nominees.
The county’s schedule places the next ACRE meeting on Jan. 6; Garcia said the formal appointment would be taken by the Board of Commissioners on Jan. 7 and that the recommended appointees have been invited to attend ACRE on Jan. 6 if the board concurs. No formal board vote occurred during the work session.
A co-chair of ACRE attending the session said the membership committee had been ‘‘very thoughtful’’ and expressed broad support for the two nominees. The county packet contains applicant summaries for the nominees, Garcia said.
The county did not provide demographic or biographical detail beyond the applicant summaries in the packet at the work session.
