Washington County introduced Alyssa Sorenger as its new chief equity and inclusion officer during the county commissioners' work session. Sorenger, who uses she/they pronouns, started with Washington County this month, county officials said.
County officials said Sorenger was selected from a nationwide search and most recently led equity work for the city of Vancouver, Washington. Officials described prior roles in Saint Louis Park, Minnesota; at the Minneapolis YWCA; and in civic engagement for childcare advocacy in Minneapolis.
“I'm excited to get to know you all and continue advancing equity within Washington County,” Sorenger said at the meeting.
County leadership said Sorenger will support county employees and the community to improve equitable access to county services. The announcement came during a routine leadership update at the work session and included a brief welcome from commissioners and staff. The county did not provide a public job description or a detailed implementation timeline during the meeting.
County commissioners said members of the Advisory Council on Racial Equity have been meeting with Sorenger; two commissioners who serve on the advisory council were noted as likely points of contact. No formal vote or board action was recorded at the meeting related to Sorenger’s hire.
