Gilroy Unified School District officials told a joint meeting of the City Council and the district board that the district expects sustained enrollment declines that will reduce state funding and require use of carryover and one-time funds.
Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Alvaro Mesa said the decline is driven in part by lower birth rates nationally and locally and by expected student generation from planned housing. Mesa presented the district's enrollment projection of about 10,100 students for the coming year and said longer-term projections show continued shrinkage in lower grade cohorts.
