Mike Pineda was sworn in as mayor of Avondale during a public installation ceremony that opened the council meeting. The oath was administered by the Hon. Pep Guzman.
The event also included the swearing-in of Janet Garcia, Gloria Salorio and Sherry Weiss as members of the Avondale City Council. Each new official recited the oath to “support the Constitution of the United States, the constitution and laws of the state of Arizona, and the charter of the city of Avondale.”
Why it matters: The ceremony formalized the new and returning members who will vote on Avondale policy and regional representation in the coming term. Several longtime local officials and former mayors attended to recognize the newly sworn officials.
Pineda thanked family members in the chamber after taking the oath. “I just would like to publicly thank my wife, Olivia, my son, Jonathan, my son, Mikey, my daughter, Angelique, my daughter, Bianca, and my parents, Daniel and Esther, for being here,” Pineda said.
Council member Janet Garcia addressed the audience after her oath, saying she was “honored and humbled to be serving the city of Avondale, the city I grew up in,” and that she was “ready to start.” Gloria Salorio and Sherry Weiss each thanked supporters and family in brief remarks following their swearing-in.
The installation ceremony concluded before the council moved on to regular business and was followed by an invitation for photos and public attendance.
