Hendry County School Board approves consent agenda, demolition and related contracts

The Hendry County School Board on Oct. 21 approved the consent agenda and several action items related to facilities and contracts, and delayed final action on the guaranteed maximum price (GMP) for Newlove High School.
The board voted to approve the consent agenda, which included standard items and two pulled items that will return to a later meeting. The board also approved policy revisions advertised as action item 5A and the district's annual contractual engagement with the Harlem Education Consortium (action 5B).
On a separate facilities item (action 5C) the board approved the superintendent's recommendation to demolish the two-story white building that adjoins an older brick structure on district property. Trustees said the building has structural deterioration, termite damage and repeated break-ins; the district reported rehabilitation costs would run “several million dollars.” Trustees said they had consulted the local historical authorities and would follow required mitigation steps before demolition.
The board then approved awarding the demolition and structural removal contract (action 5D) to a local vendor after an RFP returned multiple bids with a large price spread. Trustees noted the lowest responsive local bid was chosen.
The board pulled action item 5E — the guaranteed maximum price for Newlove High School — to allow more review. Staff said the district's architects, construction manager (Owens & Kimbell) and the state's Special Facilities unit are continuing vetting; the item will return for a workshop and vote at the Nov. 18 meeting.
Votes taken were recorded during the meeting with motions, seconds and a verbal roll call. In each approved action the presiding chair called for ‘‘aye’’ and the motion carried; the meeting transcript does not record a numerical tally or recorded dissenting votes for these items.
The board also approved the superintendent’s recommendation to pull two consent-agenda items (identified in the meeting as ADAM I and ADAM R) because staff had not yet received all required data.
Outlook: The GMP for Newlove High School will return to the board on Nov. 18 after additional review and a public workshop by the construction manager and architects.
