Carbon County shelter director reports rising adoptions, donations and outstanding facility repairs

Tom, the shelter director, reported operational and facility updates at the June 3 meeting of the Carbon County Animal Shelter Advisory Commission at 44 Susquehanna Street in Bimthorpe.
In operational statistics for April, the shelter received $2,736 in food donations (a pallet from FreshPak), reported supplies valued at $20,091, operated 16 kennels, and recorded seven adoptions. At the end of April the shelter reported 16 dogs in care; adoptions and returns to owners reduced occupancy from 22 at the start of the month to 16 at the end of the month.
For May, the director said food donations totaled $5,141 (FreshPak), supplies were $2,658, the kennel count remained 16, adoptions were nine, owner surrenders were two, and the shelter's peak simultaneous census was 18. Police calls and after-hours calls increased in May (11 and 9, respectively), the director reported.
Staffing and equipment: the shelter has one vacant part-time K‑9 officer position; an application was received and interviews were planned. The shelter ordered the final three kennel doors needed to complete its set and said vehicle operations were working well.
Facility issues: cameras have been evaluated and the county is awaiting installation. The kennel-area ceiling requires repair; a roof leak that occurs under certain wind/rain conditions has left a developing mold spot that staff flagged as a concern. The commission discussed a storage shed that has not been repaired; donors have set aside $5,000 for materials, and commissioners suggested soliciting local contractor bids or using county maintenance if scheduling permits.
Other items: the shelter submitted a request for a yard-sale fundraiser and is awaiting official approval before advertising; if approved the shelter may request an outside storage unit, pending donor support. The state dog warden was scheduled to meet with the shelter after the advisory commission meeting. The commission also sent information to the county commissioners about a proposed Eagle Scout project to build an outdoor donation box.
The director's report and facility updates drew administrative discussion but no additional formal votes beyond the motions recorded for minutes and the fenced-play-area referral to commissioners.
