The Metropolitan Council on Jan. 8 authorized two contracts for the Baton Rouge Film Commission despite some members’ requests to defer so they could meet staff.
Council debated item 57, a $120,000 consulting contract with Patent Productions Inc., after council members said the film commission’s director is expecting a newborn and asked for a short extension to avoid employment disruption. Councilman Dunn Jr. and others discussed options to postpone execution; administration representatives said the council could approve the contract without immediate execution by the mayor, and parish counsel confirmed a cancellation-for-convenience clause would provide additional protection.
Councilwoman Adams moved to approve the Patent Productions contract; Councilman Dunn Jr. seconded the motion. Council members voted to approve the contract; the motion was recorded as carried.
Item 58, a contract with Nathan Hall for up to $59,000 for film commission consulting services, was likewise approved. Council members noted one email in opposition to the item that had been shared with council members.
Why it matters: Council approval provides funding and authorization for film commission operations and consulting support in 2025. Council members requested follow-up meetings with the film commission staff to review scope and impact, and the administration agreed to brief members promptly.
What happens next: The mayor’s office may execute the agreements; council members asked that staff meet with the film commission leadership quickly to explain deliverables and outcomes. The parish attorney indicated the contracts include provisions to cancel if necessary.
