Council sets staggered deferral schedule, proceeds on selected condemnations; one deletion
Summary

The Metropolitan Council on Jan. 8 acted on the condemnation docket (agenda items 37–54), approving proceeding on a subset of properties, assigning staggered deferral periods for others and deleting item 49 from the docket.
Council members voted to proceed with items 39, 41, 42, 47, 51, 52, 53 and 54. They set 30-day deferrals on items 43, 45 and 48; a 60-day deferral on item 38; and 90-day deferrals on items 37, 40, 44, 46 and 50. Item 49 was deleted from the docket per staff request.
During the public hearing portion on the condemnations, Ashley Jackson spoke on behalf of 6635 Winborn Avenue for her father, asking for more time after a fire destroyed a family home. Jackson said the property has been in their family for more than 30 years and that neighbors had signed statements supporting extra time to clear and rebuild. The council began with a 90-day deferment to start the clearance process and instructed Jackson to meet with staff for details.
Why it matters: Condemnation proceedings affect property rights and neighborhood conditions. The council’s staggered deferral approach gives property owners varying timeframes to comply or seek remedies while allowing the city-parish to move forward on properties where inspections or code enforcement warrant quicker action.
What happens next: Code enforcement and the parish attorney will follow the deferral schedule and return items to the council for status updates. The council recorded the motion as carried (motion by Councilman Dunn Jr.; second by Councilman Kenny).
