Superintendent says athletic facilities study aims to address field, locker-room shortages

Superintendent Doctor Perino told the Franklin Regional Board of School Directors on Oct. 13 that the district has spent the past 9–10 months developing a comprehensive athletic facility study to address a ‘‘significant lack of field space’’ and insufficient locker-room facilities across multiple sports.
Perino said that current field conditions sometimes force the district to cancel or move practices indoors during spring, putting teams at a competitive disadvantage. The study is examining designs for tennis courts, softball and baseball fields, and a practice field, he said, and any improvements would be used by both high school students and community groups that use district fields.
‘‘There’ll be more to come as we move through that process and finalize some potential plans,’’ Perino said. Board members did not vote on any construction or funding at the meeting; the report was informational. No timelines or cost estimates were presented.
Perino also recognized student and team successes in athletics and academics during his report, including playoff qualifications across multiple sports and recognition of National Merit semifinalists.
