Monrovia highlights Black History Month events; alumni group to fund some seniors' cap and gowns

The Monrovia City Council’s Feb. 4 meeting included a proclamation recognizing February as Black History Month and a run-through of related community events organized in partnership with Monrovia Unified School District.
Council member Barbara Golar, who presented the proclamation, outlined multiple community events: a children’s art festival at the community center on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. (awards at 6 p.m.), a library event Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and an alumni luncheon on Feb. 23. Golar provided a contact reference for event information: a Monrovia Doherty Black Alumni Association Facebook page and website (reference given verbally during the meeting).
During the student representative reports, student representative Mr. Spicer said an alumni group for the classes of ’73–’75 has funds to pay for cap and gowns for seniors who cannot afford them. Jasmine Rodriguez, another student representative, gave a separate report on school events including a spring rally and winter formal.
Council members encouraged community participation in the Black History Month events and directed residents seeking details to the stated online pages and the city’s event listings.
