Westwood Heights students show photos, describe Egypt trip; parents, board praise experience

Students from Westwood Heights Schools presented photos and shared their experiences from a recent educational trip to Egypt, describing visits to the pyramids, temples on Philae Island and a multi-night cruise on the Nile.
Student Amaya Woodyard and other pupils narrated scenes from the trip, recounting climbing inside pyramids, visiting the Temple of Isis on Philae Island and riding camels. The students recounted local customs and tastes, including trying hibiscus tea, and showed photos from stops such as Memphis and Alexandria.
Parent Lelania Davis thanked the district for approving the trip and said it was “a once in a lifetime trip” that she and her daughter were able to take together. Davis praised trip leaders and said the group had police protection and that students were well cared for throughout the visit.
Board members responded positively. Board member Fikes said he applauded the students and the adults who organized the trip, and other directors told the students to "use your voice" and described the presentation as a vivid learning opportunity.
Students who participated also served as student board representatives at the meeting and used the time to raise classroom concerns — for example, one student board member said she is concerned that students do not have a consistent English syllabus with classic texts and urged the board to consider curriculum review. Board members invited the student speakers to continued participation at future meetings.
