Supporters said the option is narrowly applied, intended for students who are behind on credits and at risk of dropping out, and cannot be used for early graduation. "It basically creates a second track or a second option for students who are experiencing some sort of barrier to achieving that traditional diploma," said Corey, a district staff member leading the presentation. He said the core diploma keeps the same English, math, science, social studies, financial literacy, physical education and health requirements as the traditional diploma but reduces the number of elective credits required.
