New Castle County subcommittee introduces arts nominee Eric Zippe; diversity commission reappointments and Claymont design nominees discussed

The New Castle County Boards and Commissions Subcommittee on Jan. 21 introduced Eric Zippe as a nominee to the New Castle County Arts Commission and said the full County Council will vote on the appointment at next week’s meeting.
Councilman Cartier said the nomination followed the resignation of Valerie White, the district’s prior arts appointee, and welcomed Zippe to the hearing. Zippe told the subcommittee he is “a lifelong Delawarean and New Castle County resident” and has been a practicing visual artist since the early 1990s. He also clarified the pronunciation of his name: “Zippe, Z-I-P-P-E.”
Zippe said he is a 2021 Delaware Division of the Arts fellow and that he is interested in “helping facilitate other artists and other art in the public sphere.” Council members said they will place the nomination on the full council agenda for a vote next Tuesday; a subcommittee member told Zippe he does not have to attend the council meeting but is welcome to do so.
The subcommittee also discussed two reappointments to the New Castle County Diversity Commission: William McDuffie and Terrell Williams, both described by Councilman Koneko as experienced and previously serving on the commission. Members noted, however, that the Diversity Commission “hasn't been meeting recently,” saying it appears the body has not been actively meeting for about a year.
Council members raised additional appointments and vacancies across boards and commissions. Councilman Cartier said he had a candidate for the Claymont Renaissance Design Review Advisory Committee, Dan Levin, and that the nomination should be transmitted from the county administration but has not yet appeared on the subcommittee’s list. Members discussed a backlog of county executive appointments and resumes in the portal; one council member said some candidates previously were approved but the process stalled before the groups convened and reached quorums.
Procedural items handled by the subcommittee included approval of minutes from the previous meeting and an adjournment motion.
No formal votes on appointments were taken at the subcommittee meeting; the only scheduled action is the full-council vote on Zippe’s nomination next week.
