The Pryor Creek City Council voted Feb. 10 to add adoption language to the recently adopted bonding (parental leave) policy, providing two weeks of paid leave for adopting employees to be taken within six months of finalization.
Councilors discussed several models used elsewhere, including four-week and six-week paid arrangements, and the county/state models that run longer. After debate about parity between biological parents and adoptive parents and concerns about edge cases (older children, foster-care situations), the council approved a targeted amendment that adds two weeks of paid adoption leave for an adopting parent, to be used within six months after adoption finalization. The council retained the previously adopted bonding policy language for births.
Mayor Zach Doyle and several council members said the intent is to provide a baseline supportive benefit for employees who grow their families through adoption while allowing the council to revisit the policy later if broader leave is warranted.
Why it matters: The change expands the city's leave policy to recognize adoption explicitly and provides paid leave for newly adopting employees. The council's action creates parity in city practice for some family-formation events and clarifies timing for taking the leave.
What happens next: Staff will incorporate the amendment into the citys bonding policy documentation and the personnel manual. Council members said they may review the broader leave provisions later if needed.
At the meeting: the amendment was debated on the addendum and ultimately approved; council agreed the change would be applied going forward, effective from the date the bonding policy was adopted at the prior meeting.
