Colonial School District recognizes marching band, golfer and cheer squads at Dec. 2 meeting

The Colonial School District Board of Education spent part of its Dec. 2 meeting recognizing recent student athletic and performing-arts achievements across the district.
Dr. Christian introduced student recognitions and highlighted strong participation and record numbers in fall activities. Bobby Biddle, who addressed the board about the Marching Colonials, said the band won a Cavalcade competition at Dallastown High School with a final score of 92.85, earned special awards for high color guard, high overall effect and high visual, and completed the competition season undefeated. "This win is not just a triumph of skill and dedication; it is a testament to the heart and soul of our team, our school, and our community," Biddle told the board. He acknowledged staff and parent supporters and read a roster of student performers.
Golf coach Jeff Kavanaugh recognized senior Rhianna Gunaratna (transcript shows multiple spellings, including Brianna and Rhiannon) for a decorated four-year career. Kavanaugh said Gunaratna competed in 56 team matches, qualified for the Suburban 1 and District 1 tournaments in each of her four years, won the Suburban 1 tournament this year with a 70 at 5 Ponds Golf Course, won the District 1 championship and finished as the PIAA state runner-up with a two-round total of 144 (70 and 74). Kavanaugh said Gunaratna has committed to the University of Delaware.
District staff also recognized the North White Marsh High School cheer squads. A coach addressing the board said the program includes 46 student-athletes, that the varsity squad received two bids to national competitions (traditional and game-day routines) and that, for the first time, the junior varsity team also earned a bid to compete at nationals.
The recognitions included named staff and student rosters; coaches and staff thanked families, boosters and district administrators for support. These items were ceremonial recognitions and did not involve board votes or formal policy actions.
