City transit trust tables 3-year lease for additional office space

The Lawton Transit Trust on Dec. 3 tabled consideration of a proposed lease for additional operations space, voting 8-0 to delay action until trustees receive further information and hold a planned meeting on the transit center project.

The lease under consideration would have granted a three-year term for space described on the meeting agenda as adjacent to the transit maintenance facility on Southwest 6th Street to house additional day-to-day operations. Transit staff presented the proposal as a short-term solution to current space constraints and said the lease includes purchase and termination options.

Several trustees expressed concern that a three-year term could preempt decisions tied to the trust's longer-range facility plans. Trustees asked that legal confirm whether the lease contains an enforceable early-termination or appropriations clause that would allow the trust or a future governing body to decline funding. Staff said the agreement already had been reviewed by legal and contains standard appropriation and out clauses, but trustees asked for explicit confirmation at the follow-up meeting.

Trustee discussion ended with a motion to table the item until trustees meet to review the transit center maintenance and operations facility plans and receive a legal review of early‑out and appropriation language. The motion carried 8-0.

No final lease was executed; trustees directed staff to bring the item back after the scheduled planning meeting and legal review.
